REPORT of the 11TH workshop on science writing / journalism


The 11th Workshop on Science Writing/Journalism held at Tirunelveli Manonmaniam Sundaranar University from 20.03.2012 Tuesday to 24.03.2012 Saturday.

I. Inaugural Function :
Inaugurating the 11th Regional Workshop on Science Writing/Journalism at Tirunelveli, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University,  jointly organized by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, M.T.S. Academy, Chennai and Communication Department, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, the Chief Guest, Dr. B. Sanjay, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Central University, Thiruvarur, emphazised that the Science Communication should be promoted on par with other communications like Development Communication, Sports Communication, Mass Communication. This will certainly bridge the gap between the scientists and the common with a technique of lab to land. He also insisted that the Science Journalists and the Science Writers should have the prime responsibility of communicating  the actual happenings with simple words so as to reach the common man. At any cost they should not exaggerate the facts as they imagined. They should follow the ethics of journalism and press laws with utmost care.
In his Presidential Address, Dr.Manoj Patairiya, Scientist F and Director, National Council for Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Government of New Delhi, elaborated the various steps taken by the Central Government for popularizing the Science and Technology Developments among the children, youth, women and general public. INSPIRE Programmes introduced by the Secretary, Dr.T.Ramasami is very much popular among the school students all over India. Not only that various programmes in different formats designed by the NCSTC were broadcast and telecast in All India Radio and Doordarshan over the years on various important occasions. Number of workshops, seminars,  conferences in the National and International level are being organized every year for updating the latest developments to the Scientists, Professors, Journalists, Science Communicators, Media Experts, Students and also the researchers on various fields. The workshop on Science Writing/Journalism really motivates the young graduates to promote scientific knowledge, scientific temper and scientific attitude as a way of life and in turn it helps them to organize such awareness programmes in their respective villages to create more awareness among the general public. He advised the participants to take more care in attending all the lectures including the field visits to know more about science and technology.  It is not only to know more about the latest developments in science and technology but to write the same thing in different formats of communication for the benefit of target audience through various media in a phased manner. He also requested the media experts and the media decision makers to give more space in the dailies and more duration of time in the radio and television for popularizing science among the general public for imbibing the scientific temper and scientific attitude.
While delivering the Feliciation Address, Member, Screening Committee of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and the Principal,  S.T. Hindu College, Nagarcoil, Prof. Dr. S. Meenakshisundararajan informed that the prime role of Science Communicators should be realized by the participants during the five days course from 20th to 24th March,2012 in the Department of Communication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Veteran Scholars in various subjects are invited for this wonderful workshop for training the young science writers and journalists who are really very ambitious and enthusiastic to learn more. Keeping in view of  the information revolution through internet and mobile technology,  science writers and journalists should update their knowledge and upload the same to the public through various electronic media which will certainly popularize science and technology among the general public.
Shri. A. Sarathy,  Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India, Tirunelveli delivered Felicitation Address. He said that State Bank of India plays a significant role in the popularization of science by sponsoring number programmes on public interest. He also added that all the Nationalised Banks are encouraging young graduates to get higher education in India and abroad by providing education loan and youngsters   to start their own companies and industries. Students can avail the facilities extended by the banks.
Earlier Prof. and Head of the Department Dr.P.Govindaraju welcomed the gathering and insisted that all the participants should attend the workshop without fail and take note of all the important points for their own benefit.  A  rare and rich opportunities are given to them in which eminent Professors and Scientists from various areas are delivering their research findings.  Five days  workshop from 20th to 24th March will certainly motivate them to write more about science and technology in different formats to various media for the target audience as they wish. It is an additional feather in the achievement of his department to have such long duration of 5 days workshop in the Department of Communication of the reputed Manonmaniam Sundaranar Univrsity.
Dr.Cheyon, Hony.Secretary, M.T.S.Academy, Chennai  detailed the prime aim of the workshop and informed that 5 selected participants of this workshop will be given Arivukkalanjiyam Prizes namely, Arivu Malar, Arivu Kadhir, Arivu Thalir, Arivu Thulir, and Arivu Pudhir.  He also insisted that the Field Visits to Tharangadara Chemicals Limited in Arumuganeri, Tuticorin District and V.O.C. Port Trust at Tuticorin will be very much interesting areas for the young writers and journalists who are attending this workshop.

51 participants from the Education Institutions, Colleges, Universities and popular media in and around Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar Districts participated in the Workshop with all enthusiasm and vigor.

There were 8 Technical Sessions and one Field Visit were there during this workshop from  20th to 24th  March, 2012 at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. All the technical sessions were chaired by any one of the resource persons and local science experts.

         The above said topics were dealt by the experts of the respective fields by using multi media presentation and OHP. All the topics were very well explained by the experts. Participants expressed that they were very much impressed by the valuable lectures and it reflected in their script writing and feed back at the valedictory function.
IV. Field Visit :
We arranged a field visit to Tharangathara Chemicals, Arumuganeri, Tuticorin District and then to Tuticorin Port on Friday, the 23rd March, 2012. Around 61 persons including the participants, resource persons and journalists visited the place and they enjoyed the trip very much. The purpose of the visit to train the participants for writing a report about the Field Visit in different formats according to the media and target audience.     
V. Reflections of Resource Persons :
Resource Persons from Chennai, Rasipuram, Selam District, Tanjavur, Nagarcoil, Trivandrum participated. Local Resource Persons in and around Tirunelveli and Tuticorin  District also participated. They not only detailed the subjects, ways and means of Science Communication and its impact on Society but also knocked the door of the mind of the young participants of various colleges, university, journalists of local press in and around Tirunelveli. All the Resource Persons were very much impressed by the keen listening and thought provoking questions raised by the participants especially from rural areas and sincere attentiveness in all the 10 Technical Sessions of the 5 days workshop. Out of 51 participants 29 were female and 22 were male. All the participants attended all the 8 Technical Sessions with all enthusiasm, and earnestness. Really all the Resource Persons astonished the total involvement of the participants and journalists for learning the various formats of science communication in order to translate their ideas of respective fields into effective Science Communication to popularize science among the common people.
VI. Feed-Back of Participants :
All the 51 participants expressed their immense happiness, rare and rich opportunities to meet the Science Experts from various parts of the country and their eagerness to teach about various formats of Science Communication for popularizing science among the general public. Most of the participants viewed that this type of 5 days workshop encourages them to know more about Science Communication and its importance to dispel ignorance of darkness for glowing the light of knowledge. It not only promoted their Scientific Temper but also enhanced their Scientific Wisdom for popularizing it more among the public.
In view of the above facts we assure you that we have achieved our targets by training 51 Science Writers and Journalists which in turn they will certainly create more awareness among the youngsters in due course.
VII. Valedictory Function :
Delivering the Valedictory Address in the 11th Regional Workshop on Science Writing / Journalism  jointly organized by National Council for Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, M T S Academy, Chennai & Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Mass Communication Department, Tirunelveli on Saturday the 24th March, 2012,  Dr. P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai emphasized that the basic science is to be learnt by the students with total involvement for learning advance science and technology with reference to the latest developments. When the whole world is switching over from Information Revolution to Knowledge Revolution, the young graduates of all the science disciplines must equip themselves in Science Communication and its importance. This workshop would have given you a panoramic view of the Science Communication and its role in the modern world. He advised the students to spread the importance of science and technology in a simple method to the villages they belong and inculcate the importance of scientific awareness, scientific knowledge and scientific temper in their day today life. He also congratulated all the participants and the prizes winners of the workshop and distributed the Arivukkalanjiyam Prizes and Participation Certificates.
In his Presidential Address, Prof. Dr.S.Manickam, Registrar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University said that there are so many opportunities available for the Science Writers, Science Journalists and Science Communicators as they are bridging the gap between the Scientists and the common man, Corporate Sectors and the general public. Media plays a vital role in this technical era. The Science Communicators can make use of this golden opportunity for their individual development and Nation Building.
While delivering the Special Address, Chief Naval Commander, Shri. Sai. Venkatraman, INS Kattabomman Nagarcoil, detailed the role of defense service like Army, Navy and Air Force and their selfless efforts to develop the nation and giving adequate protection to the Nation from the invasion of foreign countries. The defense service in general promotes individual discipline, collective responsibility for the development of the Nation and its role for Global Peace. The latest advancements of Science and Technology are very well utilized by the defense service for not only updating their knowledge but also project the dignity of our country.  Hence the youngsters studying various courses in the university and colleges can avail the career opportunities in the defense service which will be certainly a challenging and progressive career for their life.
Delivering the Felicitation Address, Shri.C.Srinivas, Assistant General Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Tirunelveli informed the role of Nationalised Banks for the development of Science and Technology through various sources. He also emphasized that the banks are helping the young graduates for their higher studies in India and abroad. Innumerable youth were benefited through Educational Loan. He further advised that the youth of today should take a vow to popularize Science and Technology among the general public continuously for creating more scientific awareness.
While delivering Introductory Address Dr. Cheyon, Hony.Secretary, M.T.S. Academy, Chennai informed that the selected 5 best participants of the workshop will be invited for the Advanced Level Workshop on Science Writing / Journalism. He further added that the best scripts selected in the workshop will be recommended for Electronic Media like All India Radio, FM Radios of Private, Community Radios of Universities and NGOs in the Tamil Nadu State.
Earlier Dr.P.Govindaraju, Department of Communication, Manonmaiam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli insisted that the students and journalists can utilize this workshop for their active participation in the electronic media and print media to disseminate the nuances of Science and Technology to the different target group like children, youth, women, senior citizen and general public in a phased manner. He also thanked MTS Academy for choosing their Communication Department of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University as one of the main organizers of this mega event.

In the 11th Workshop on   Science Writing/Journalism around 51 participants were benefited directly. We assure you that the young science writers who had been trained in these 5 days workshops will certainly prepare their contributions on different topics in various formats of science communication and send them to mass media according to the target audience.
On the whole, M.T.S. Academy successfully achieved its targets by conducting 11 Workshops on Science Writing / Journalism from June 2004 to March, 2012. More than 650 youngsters from various Colleges and Universities were given sufficient training to become effective Science Communicators for popularizing Science and Technology among the general public as to the guidelines issued by the N.C.S.T.C.

Advanced Level Workshop on Science Writing / Journalism was conducted at Hotel Kanchi, Chennai for five days from 24th to 28th November, 2009 in association with the National Council for Science and Technology Communication, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Government of Tamil Nadu, Chennai.
Inaugurating the Advanced Level Workshop Er. Anuj Sinha, Head, National Science and Technology Communication, Government of India, New Delhi insisted that the Journalists and the Science Communicators should play a key role in taking Science and Technology among the general public. First of all they should understand the nuances of Science and Technology and write it in a simple local language in order to popularize the same among the rural people. They must know the importance of popular media like Radio, T.V., Film, Press, Internet etc and utilize them to disseminate the scientific information and innovation time to time to the general public through various formats of Science Communication. He also emphasized that the Science Writers and Journalists participating in this workshop should become an expert in Science Communication and bridge the gap between the Scientists and Common man.
While delivering the Presidential Address Dr.P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre and Vice-Chairman, Science City, Government of Tamil Nadu explained the various activities of the centre for popularizing Science and Technology among the general public. The centre plays a vital role in the Tamil Nadu State to take Science and Technology among the rural people through mobile vans depicting the various Scientific Achievements and the yeomen services of Scientists for the development of Nation.
Smt. Usha Ananthasubramanian, General Manager, Bank of Baroda, Chennai insisted that women writers and journalists should take more initiations in popularizing the Science and Technology among the children and women who are having major role in the society.
Dr. C.M. Nautiyal, Director, BSIP, Lucknow requested the young writers and journalists should more interest in core subjects like physics, chemistry, biology etc instead of concentrating more on Information Technology, Engineering and Medical Courses. He also suggested that young scientists should come forward to do more research in the laboratory and give suitable publicity to their achievements time to time through all the popular media.
Earlier Shri. AV.K. Ezhilmani, Advocate, High Court and Patron of MTS Academy detailed the various activities and achievements of the MTS Academy for the past 25 years and leading towards the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in the year 2010. Shri. S. Kiruthivasan, Patron, MTS Academy welcomed the gathering.
Dr. S. Sambasivam, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Presidency College proposed vote of thanks. As the Coordinator of the Advanced Level Workshop detailed the topics and resource persons of the ten technical sessions for five days. He also informed that there will be field visit on the last day of the workshop which enthused most of the participants and audience.
Dr. Nautiyal, Director, BSIP, Lucknow, Dr. Nellai Su. Mutthu, Sr. Scientist, ISRO and popular Science Writer in Tamil and Dr. S. Sambasivam, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Presidency College, Chennai were Resource Persons for all the five days. They gave various types of techniques to the participant for making their script more effective suitable to the media and the target audience.
Dr. Varma, Prof. and Head, Indian Institute of Technology, Dr. M. Arul Aram, Head, Science Communication, Anna University, Dr. Mutthuvelu, Associate Professor, Presidency , College, Dr. Thirunalasundari, Prof. & Head, Biotechnology Department, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Dr. Jayanthi Kesavan, Prof. & Head, Computer Department, Periyar Maniammai Univesity, Tanjore, Dr. Subbiah Pandian, Professor of Physics, Presidency College, Chennai delivered lectures in their respective areas and guided the participants to write the scripts every day and made them submit the day end for all the four days.
Dr. Loyola, Sr. General Manager, Hundai Motor Company Ltd, Chennai, Thriu. V.S. Ramana, General Manager, ECC, L&T, Chennai, Dr. Cheyon, Asst. Station Director, All India Radio presented papers about their departments and motivated the participants to write science and technology articles in various formats suitable to the audience and the media.
Dr. Manoj Patairiya, Director, and Scientist F, NCSTC delivered special on Science Communication and its vital role in the academic services, industries, research institutes, public sectors, electronic and print media. He emphasized that the Universities should come forward to teach Science Communication as a core subject and train the students with a view to get jobs as Corporate Communicators in the public and private sectors. He also insisted that the media should give importance to the science events, achievements and science exhibitions regularly to popularize science and technology among the general public.
We arranged a Field Visit to one of the modern ports of India, Ennore Port in Chennai. All the participants, Resource Persons and the organizers visited the port. That visit gave a new experience to all the participants and the resource persons. How a port is functioning?  How many ships are coming from India and abroad? What are the regular activities of the port? How best it helps to export and import? How it is contributing to the development of Indian Economy and Foreign Exchanges.
In the Valedictory Address Dr. R.T. Sabhapathy, Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli narrated the importance of language to disseminate science and technology among the general public through media. He profusely quoted from Thirukkural a bible of Tamils related to scientific aspects and the changes as to the technological developments and  emphasized that Language and Science are the two eyes of human being.

Despite of so much of developments of science and technology, still the supernatural elements are being practiced by the people especially in rural areas. Unless they practice science in day today life you cannot create scientific awareness and temper among the people. Here the educated youth and the young journalists and media communicators can concentrate and take science to them mere motivation and encouragement through some entertainment programmes. He further advised the participants to practice what all they learnt in this advanced workshop on science writing and journalism.
In his Presidential Address, Hon’ble Justice S. Jagadeesan reiterated that the press and electronic media should play a major role in the popularization of science and technology among the general public. Unless the people of all the places are updated with the developments of technology and worth of science in their day today life, they can practice science as their attitude. He also insisted that the younger generation should read the history of scientists and register their efforts for inventions and innovations in their heart which will certainly enrich their scientific knowledge and scientific wisdom.
Dr. C.M. Nautiyal observed that all the participants in the workshop attended the workshop with all interest, devotion and dedication for learning the various aspects of science and technology delivered by the Resource Persons from various fields of science and technology. He appreciated the participants for their sincere efforts to become a successful science communicator. But it can be achieved only if they contribute scientific articles and information regularly to the press and electronic media.
Participants of the Advanced workshop aired their views in the valedictory Function. They observed that they had another advantage of renewing and refreshing their science communication through the different research papers on various fields presented by the resource persons. It not only enlightened their mind but also illuminated their heart. They expressed happiness about the Field Visit to Ennore Port for getting more exposure to sea areas, ships, boats and containers. They thanked NCSTC and MTS Academy for giving another opportunity to attend the advanced workshop in Chennai.
Finally the Chief Guest Hon’ble Justice S. Jagadeesan distributed Arivukkalanjiyam Awards - Arivu Malar, Arivu Kathir, Arivu Thalir, Arivu Thulir, Arivu Puthir to the best five participants who scored highest points.

Around 60 selected students from Anna University, Chennai, Pondicherry Central University, Pudhucherry, Periyar University, Selam, C.S.I. Polytechnic College, Salem and Veterinary Science Research and Animal Husbandry Institute, Namakkal. They observed that their articles and creations should be published in science journals and the electronic media time to time then only they can write frequently.
Really the Advanced Level Workshop on Science Writing/Journalism is a new experience to our Academy at Chennai. We selected six students from the nine workshops we conducted earlier in Tamil Nadu State. More than 600 students are benefited through these workshops. Further this advanced level workshop paved a way to train the best writers to an effective science communicator.
As a result we achieved our goal by motivating the youngsters to become the Effective Communicators for popularizing science among the general public.

REGIONAL workshop on Science Communication through folk media at Lakshadweep
Regional Workshop on Science Communication through Folk Media held at Agatti Island, Lakshadweep for five days from 18-04-2010 to 22-04-2010. This was jointly organized by M.T.S. Academy, Chennai, National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Government of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Science and Technology Centre, Kavaratti, Lakshadweep and IXORA, Agatti, Lakshadweep.
I. Inaugural Function :
Inaugurating the Regional Workshop, the Chief Guest, Dr. Manoj Patairiya stressed the importance of Science Communication which is the need of hour. The Science Communicators are bridging the gap between the Scientists and the general public. India lives in villages. Folk Arts are very popular among the rural mass. To create more awareness about the developments of science and technology, promote scientific attitude, scientific temper and scientific wisdom folk arts can be used as tools to reach the village people since they are more familiar with folk arts. Usually the folk artists are performing their arts before the villagers and narrating the stories of Mahabharat, Ramyan, Mahabali Chakravarthi, Puranic Stories etc. The prime aim of this workshop is taking science and technology to the gross-root level through their own arts. He further added that the participants should communicate scientific achievements to their own people through folk arts. He also requested the Folk Performing Artists to express the scientific information in a creative manner through folk arts.
In his Presidential Address, the Deputy Collector of Agatti Island, Shri. Kunj Koya emphasized that this is a great opportunity for the youngsters of Agatti and nearby islands to know about the latest scientific and technological developments and meeting the Mass Science Communicators, Scientists, Science Professors, Media Experts and Folk Performers. Utilize the golden chance for learning methodologies and the techniques of science communication and impart the same to the youth of Agatti and nearby islands for their own benefit. He thanked the NCSTC Officials and the organizers of MTS Academy and Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai for choosing the Agatti Island of Lakshadweep for organizing the five days workshop. He assured that he will extend all help to conduct the workshop in a successful manner.
The Guest of Honour of the Inaugural Function of the workshop, Smt.Shahar Bhan, President of Agatti Panchayat Office, informed that the women in that Agatti are very active, vibrant and cooperative for any developmental activities of Agatti. Mentioning the more number of women participants in the Science Workshop she insisted that male students should come more in number on par with the woman students. Science and Technology have contributed much to the development of Indian. India is marching towards the Developing Countries status for which the youth of today are to concentrate more on their studies and the skill development in creative writing, spoken English and effective communication. She advised the participants of the workshop to attend to the workshop all the five days with due care, devotion and involvement so as to become the Effective Science Communicators of Agatti for improving the status of Agatti and nearby islands of Lakshadweep.
Prof. Dr. S. Sambasivam, Head, Department of Zoology, Presidency College, Chennai elaborated the importance of natural resources especially the marine areas which are plenty in Lakshadweep Islands. The youth of Agatti should know the marine wealth of their islands and make use of their individual and community prosperity with a broad outlook for Nation Building.
Dr. Cheyon, I.B.S., Asst. Station Director, All India Radio, Chennai and Hony. Secretary, M.T.S. Academy – A Rainbow Human Resources Development, NGO, Chennai and the Principal Coordinator of the workshop detailed the prime role of participants and the resource person for all the five days workshop on Science Communication through folk media. He informed that there will be ten technical sessions in addition to the Inaugural and Valedictory Functions. Every day there will be interaction with the participants in addition to the Technical Sessions in which subject experts and the resource persons will deliver lectures in their respective fields. Popular Folk Performers will present demonstrations of folk arts and its role in communicating scientific achievements and scientific awareness.  He assured the participants that there will be a field visit in the fourth day for which all the participants will be taken to Desalination Plant, Acquarium, Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India and the Solar Energy Plant available in
Agatti Island. Shri. Abdul Raheem, Wild Life Warden, Department of Forests, Agatti Island and the Hony. President IXORA welcomed the gathering and Shri. Abdul Nazar proposed vote of thanks.

57 participants from the Education Institutions, Colleges, Universities and popular media in and around Agatti Island in Lakshadweep participated in the Workshop with all enthusiasm
and vigor.

Every day end, all the participants submitted creative presentations on various topics in different formats suitable to the media and target audience.

There were 10 Technical Sessions and one Field Visit were there during this workshop from18th to 22nd April, 2010 at Agatti, Lakshadweep.  All the technical sessions were chaired by any one of the resource persons and local science experts. The following topics were dealt with:

The above said topics were dealt by the experts of the respective fields by using multi media presentation and OHP. All the topics were very well explained by the experts. Participants expressed that they were very much impressed by the valuable lectures and it reflected in their script writing and feed back at the valedictory function.
IV. Field Visit :
We arranged a field visit to various places in and around Agatti Island on 21stApril 2010. Around 65 persons including the participants, resource persons and journalists visited the Desalination Plant, Govt.Acquuarium, Solar Energy Panels and at last Agatti Beach where we had Anthakshari. That was an excellent show performed by the youngsters who are very much interested in film songs and films.
V. Reflections of Resource Persons :
All the Resource Persons were very much impressed by the keen listening and thought provoking questions raised by the participants especially from rural island areas and sincere attentiveness in all the 10 Technical Sessions of the 5 days workshop. Out of 60 participants 40 were female and 20 were male. All the participants attended all the 10 Technical Sessions  including Inaugural and Valedictory Functions with all enthusiasm, earnestness and vigor. Really all the Resource Persons astonished the total involvement of the participants and journalists for learning the various formats of science communication in order to translate their ideas of respective fields into Effective Science Communication through Folk Media to popularize science among the common people who are the needy persons.
VI. Feed-Back of Participants :
All the 57 participants expressed their immense happiness, rare and rich opportunities to meet the Science Experts from various parts of the country and their eagerness to teach about various formats of Science Communication through folk media for popularizing science among the general public.
Most of the participants viewed that this type of five days workshop encourages them to know more about Science Communication and its importance to dispel ignorance of darkness for glowing the light of knowledge. It is not only promoted their Scientific Temper but also enhanced their Scientific knowledge and Scientific Wisdom for popularizing it more among the public.
In view of the above facts we assure you that we have achieved our targets by training
60 young Science Writers
 which in turn they will certainly create more awareness among the youngsters of their respective areas in due course.
VII. Valedictory Function :
Delivering the Valedictory Address in the 10th Regional Workshop on Science Communication through Folk Media at Agatti Island, Lakshadweep jointly organized by National Council for Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, M T S Academy, Chennai, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai and Science and Technology Centre, Kavartti, Lakshadweep, Brigadier Shri. T.K. Murali, Deputy Director General, Kerala State and Lakshadweep, Union Territory emphasized that the youth of today should utilize this golden opportunity of learning Science Communication through folk media for their individual development and society improvement. Training will always motivate the youth for their betterment and prosperity. In addition to that learning with different kinds of youth belong to various faculties and colleges will definitely promote unity in diversity and national integration. Folk Arts are the symbol of Indian Culture and Heritage. If those arts are utilized for popularization of Science among the general public that is really a service to the nation.
Shri. V. Krishnan, Manager, Air India, Chennai presided over the Valedictory Function and delivered Presidential Address. In his address he recollected his college days and advised the participants to practice what all they learnt during these five days through workshop. Following the principle of each one should teach one, they can carry the message gained from this workshop to their friends and native people in different villages they belong.  
Smt. Sasirekha, H.R. Consultant, Chennai insisted the importance of Science Communication and its prime role in everyone’s day today life. Realizing this, the trainees should try to disseminate the same to the general public through folk arts.
The Chief Guest of the Valedictory Function distributed the Arivukkalanjiyam Prizes to the following participants and Participation Certificates to all the participants.

IX. Impact of Workshop :
In the tenth Workshop on   Science Communication through Folk Media at Agatti Island Lakshadweep, around 60 young participants were benefited directly. We assure you that the young science writers who had been trained in these 5 days workshops will certainly prepare their contributions on different topics in various formats of science communication in folk arts and send the same to mass media according to the target audience. They will certainly utilize the folk arts for the science communication. In addition to that they will approach the Folk Performers and motivate them to keep the scientific themes for their performances in the rural areas.
On the whole, M.T.S. Academy successfully achieved its targets by conducting the

th  Workshop on Science communication through Folk Media in the difficult area Agatti Island, Lakshadweep for five days which is really a significant and remarkable success in its projects for the general public. However it was achieved only with the able and efficient guidance of Dr.Manoj Patairiya, Scientist F and Director, NCSTC, New Delhi.
